Become an Artist Sponsor
Interested in seeing a specific character of mine again? Miss seeing Sardi and wonder what she may be up to? Maybe you're simply a fan of my art, head world, and/or characters and would like to see more of it! By becoming an artist sponsor you will essentially be commissioning me to work on my own quality personal art while I toil away at regular commissions.
As an Artist Sponser you may request a specific character, theme, or request to see something or someone new! These are just a few examples of course, and the more you donate as a sponsor the more time and effort I will be able put into the polished image. As an example, a $20 donation will allow me to create either a refined sketch or a full blown line art. A donation over $50 will allow me to create a cel-shaded, soft-shaded, or painterly image. Items $100 and up will allow me to go all out into full lineless, painterly illustrations. The amount of donation will also determine how much control you will have over the request, for example a $20 donation will let you specify a character or theme where as a $60 donation will allow you to request a setting, character, and interaction if you so choose. While I will not provide works in progress as these are personal works, you will be displayed in the artist description as the sponsor of the image.

I get the impression from your similar ToS, that we've both run into more or less the same issues when accepting commissions.
Reply
:iconskysealer:
Skysealer Featured By Owner Aug 30, 2011
I haven't, actually! All of my commissioners have been a pleasure to work with due to always having had a very concise ToS from the beginning.
I've gleamed a lot of information from artists_beware over on LJ, horror stories from fellow artists, and general business sense. I'd like to say I did my homework ahead of time, and it has saved me a lot of trouble and headache(or so I'm guessing).

Hmm, wish I had had the same set of experienced artists to fall back on. When I started out about 8 years ago, just about everyone was new to the online commission world. I had a few nightmare commissioners, and I'm still dogged by them on occassion. A ToS only goes so far - some commissioners just choose to ignore what parts they don't like.I've just thrown up a new fairness policy. I'm sick of commissioners fighting over limited slots.

Skysealer Featured By Owner Aug 31, 2011
Hmm, limited slots... I think I recall reading about picking and choosing a commission that you feel comfortable with in your most recent journal. I personally think that's a great idea and also exactly what I do now, as slot reservation never truly worked out for me. For instance, say the commissioner would open up again a few months down the road and list off each person on the reserve list supposedly ready to commission them -- except none of them can at that point due to the length of time and no longer having the funds they once had to spare. That's my biggest problem with wait lists, I guess. First come, first serve has worked wonders -- with the exception that I'm still choosy over which requests I take and feel the most comfortable with (especially turnover).

Zyden Featured By Owner Aug 31, 2011  Professional Digital Artist
I used to take deposits to reserve slots, so my reserve list was pretty much a sure thing. My major problem stems from the same commissioners always wanting all my vacancies. So say I re-open in summer and I have 2 slots going. BUT that commissioner will have already paid his deposit on them months ago. Other people then email me asking why I'm not taking commissions, or always taking them from him and they've been waiting in the wings with their money for well.... months! I have to say, after a while of the same character over and over, I am ready for something new.
I also have big issues with people reserving slots and asking for commissions that are in-theme at the time of ordering, paying their deposit, then a month later when I'm ready to start, they then want something that has nothing to do with anything in my gallery. This might be due to me drawing various topics, but when I get asked to do comic pages or animations, I feel a bit dazed and peeved.
Hopefully, by avoiding reservations and waiting lists, I can pick up 'missions almost exactly at the time I'm ready to start them, and so avoid all this trouble. Sadly it means the income isn't so predictable, but it's not like I don't have a day-job. But I cant work out how to stop certain people from hassling me in general when I turn their commission down.

I really have to remember to check you commission status more often.
I have an epic picture in mind which I want to be drawn. Although it likely blows the "Full Illustration" category. It also has its fair share of humans in it (beside the dragons) and I don't have much references (but then, I don't have specific characters in mind, either). So I don't know if you would be comfortable with drawing it.

But thats just rambling. When I manage to catch you when you are open we can discuss this.

i want a commission because you draw dragons well and i do not and i need to get the ideas of how to draw such a creature myself, is asking you for something like this silly?
Reply
:iconskysealer:
Skysealer Featured By Owner Aug 30, 2011
It most certainly isn't a silly question! Just keep in mind that you probably aren't going to get to the level you want to be over night. Study anatomy, read about how things function, practice with still-life imagery (they DO serve a purpose!) of real life objects, people, and animals. Look into color theory and read about composition structures.

Also, keep in mind that the tool does not make an artist. A fancy-smancy Cintiq isn't going to magically make a stick figure into a work rivaling Michelangelo. Practice, study, observe, and learn!

XDDD thank you. I will look more into the anatomy and funtion bit
still life...i hate them but your right they have good use. color theory? i pased that clas but i dont understand what you mean by composition structures?

(and for the last bit its fine i cant aford anything nice till i can make the money for it with my art)

Just a question, the Full Colour Illustration. Does that come with a background? Or do you have to pay the extra 40 bucks for a background?
Reply
:iconskysealer:
Skysealer Featured By Owner Aug 26, 2011
It typically comes with a background, but depending upon complexity the price can change drastically (also, please ignore the current prices in my journal, they are not accurate and are undergoing huge revisions).

Reply
:iconskysealer:
Skysealer Featured By Owner Aug 25, 2011
Yes, and the price would be negotiable since you would not want a background. Since my commission information is completely undergoing construction, I do not have any accurate estimate prices for people to look at just yet (ignore what I have in the journal). c:

I would need to see the character to determine complexity. When it comes to prices, I also prefer to talk in notes as I highly value customer privacy. :)
