So you'd rather not learn from life? Learn for yourself? It's the best teacher.
Referencing other artists will only teach you the errors of their ways, the 'how' they do it and not the 'why'. You'd pick up on my anatomical mistakes and it is the wrong way to go about things when photographic references are completely available and abundant.
You're not going to improve overnight so why not do yourself a favor and take the time required to learn? Be patient, be observant. Don't fall into the pitfall trap that is merely copying others. Expand your knowledge sets and you'll be a better artist for it.
Every Aeryx looks completely, and sometimes radically, different from each other; no two Aeryx look alike because of the amount of aether in their blood causing their genetics to be rather chaotic. They still revolve around a generalized bodily template for the overall species, but Sardiryx is the only one that looks the way she does.
Mmm, all of her previous references are in storage but I do have plans to one day redraw all of her various versions side by side along with all the wacky height differences she underwent! (She shrunk so much, haha)
Brilliant ref sheet, it's very well organized, there's a bunch of info and still it's easy to read. Your Sardiryx is so magnificent and lovely, the way You made her shows all the effort You put into this character. And it's good to know that such creatures exist.
Bla. I dont think Ive even commented on this yet XD Oh lazy Sez! Awh, she is such a handsome birdie <3 My favourite features of her were always her microraptor-like feathered feet and her feathered arms ^^ So I'm glad you kept these features. I am liking the more realistic anatomy of the legs now rather than those traditionally very long biped-dragon ones everyone always seems to draw raptors with XD And her new comb, is adorable <3 Smaller sheet! Much easier to read too ;D love it!
Oooh thank you, Sez! Always happy to read your comments! I agree about her feet and arms -- they're there to stay permanently, Sardi definitely wouldn't feel right without them. Microraptor all the way! c: And as much as I love long, elegant legs on bipedal dragons because of their avian quality they just don't work on Sardi, but I love seeing them on others' dragons! Sardi's more of a pocket-rocket with those muscled haunches of hers. I wanted to portray her as being more grounded since she's often scavenging on the ground when she's not in the sky and really needs the get-up-and-go when a venator comes a-knockin'. So.. shorter legs and big thighs. c: Sardi's a bit clumsy when it comes from jumping from limb to limb in the trees anyway. As for comb - she doesn't have a comb (flesh) she has crests (hard keratin) and they're the same as the last ref, I just took her horns away! c:
It's interesting to see how Sardi has changed over the last four or so years that I've been watching you, if I remember correctly didn't she used to have membrane wings? XD she used to remind me much more of a dragon than a bird/raptor, I like how she has evolved into a sleek elegant looking creature, more like a theropod
She did have membranous wings in the past! It wasn't until 2009 when I switched over to the floof-side. c: She was also super huge when she first came to be, and a quadruped! Every new rendition of her shaved her size down by a lot. Sardi is set to stay forever at 5'3" now. :n
I definitely prefer this tangent she's trodden design-wise.
Your refs always amazed me, all those details! Sardiryx is a pretty interesting character as well! I didn't know that a society existed amoung the Sartian and it makes thing more interesting, I would like to know more!
I think I posted about the Sartuk once on my tumblr, I'll dig it up. It's a very small tidbit of information, but I plan to share more information about them soon. :> They see Sardiryx as one of their own since she was raised up in their society, I think it neat how they incorporate the Aeryx (and lesser Aeryx in Sardi's case) into their civilization.
I didn't saw it... Wow, that look really great! Hum, I already asked someone about that but, how do you feel about your headworld? I mean, when I'm tying to build it, I'm always afraid that if I put something, I'll not be able to do other thing. Feel like adding things will forced me to give up on others. Do you feel like that? Do you feel like it's easy to build, you already have the main ideas, or do you just build little by little over the time?
I feel it's easy to build because I'm not actively building it... it just comes to me. I'll have little 'day dreams' that seem more like intense flashbacks or I'll have rather vivid dreams of an individual, an event, so on and so forth. These are all fairly common throughout the week, too. It's rare I go without a week of at least one vivid dream. So overall, I 'build' little by little over time as these beings come to me and introduce themselves, sharing their knowledge along the way. :>
I have no words. Everybody already said everything I had to say. I love raptors. I love dragons. I love wings. I love feathers. I love tropical animals. I love the color purple. I love simple originality. This is everything that I love, all in one piece of art. I need to thank you for making Sardiryx with your incredibly detailed and unfathomable imagination. ^_^
